The LivingWorks ASIST Training for Trainers (T4T) course trains people with existing teaching, presentation, or leadership experience to conduct the two-day ASIST workshop. With over 6,000 active trainers worldwide, LivingWorks ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention skills workshop. Studies have shown that it not only increases caregiver competence and knowledge, but also significantly improves outcomes when used to help people who are experiencing thoughts of suicide.
The five-day T4T is the first step toward becoming a registered ASIST trainer and providing your own workshops. Attendees learn the content and process of ASIST and the skills needed to conduct it. The course and the ongoing support from LivingWorks provide a cost-effective way to develop life-assisting knowledge and skills in your community.
Here are some of the factors that tend to increase the likelihood of becoming a successful LivingWorks ASIST trainer:
Even if you don’t feel you have all these skills, commitment and willingness to learn count for a great deal.
Attendees can expect a balance of challenge, support, and opportunities for participation at the T4T.
Participation in the five sections of an ASIST workshop: Preparing, Connecting, Understanding, Assisting and Working Together.
Transition to the trainer role.
“Dress rehearsal” of day 1 of ASIST
“Dress rehearsal” of day 2 of ASIST
Practical implementation activity, review of T4T and learning goals.
One training coach will be present for every five to six participants, and attending all five days is mandatory. In addition, it should be noted that it takes two trainers to present an ASIST workshop, so candidates should ensure that they will have a training partner to work with in their area or organisation before getting involved. These partners could be other participants in their T4Ts, existing ASIST trainers, or a combination of both.
The process of becoming a registered ASIST trainer is a significant commitment for participants (and their organisations, if applicable). However, as more than 6,000 ASIST trainers around the world can attest, the rewards are worth the effort.

“Fantastic… a real growing experience. The most challenging course I have ever taken. Every activity expanded my knowledge, my skills, and my personal awareness.”
“ASIST is really cleverly designed, particularly when we do ASIST workshops with people who are trainers themselves, they understand the learning styles and principles in there. The less content you bring, the more you can work with people to discover jointly. You just say “here’s the model” and people fill it in with their own experiences.”
“The ASIST T4T run in Melbourne (Australia) was my first ever overseas training. The ASIST coaches also spared no efforts in making me feel at home and welcomed. All of them made time, especially during breaks and meals, to check in if I was able to cope with their pacing and allowed me space to clarify different terminology / communication context that were uniquely Australian. They were also very detailed yet generously encouraging in their inputs to help us become better trainers.”
